teejay'S REVIEWS
Jack White – ‘Boarding House Reach
11 JANUARY 2018
RATED 9/10
Jack White has finally lost the plot – and he sounds totally brilliant. On his third solo album he’s at last shaken off the bluesy shackles of the White Stripes and has created something wild, mysterious and unlike anything else around. Bravo, Jack. ‘Boarding House Reach’ is a wilfully weird patchwork of New Orleans jazz, rabble-rousing testifying gospel, squelchy chip-tune funk, gameshow jingles, early Bronx hip-hop and the occasional sound of a microwave malfunctioning. Think Tom Waits meets the Beastie Boys and you’re kind of getting there.
In true Jack White fashion, the album was written in isolationist conditions, with White cutting himself off from the world and bringing in just a 4-track recorder and a dodgy old mixer for company. That he’s produced such a full, lush sounding thing packed with personality and life is impressive – but not surprising.

Bishop Nehru – ‘Elevators Act: I & II’
JANUARY 31, 2018
RATED 8/10
Things are looking up for Bishop Nehru. Quite literally – his debut solo album is the aptly titled ‘Elevators: Act I & II’, and the final song, ‘Rooftops’, sees the New York rapper boast: “I’m tryna shoot for the sky like it’s rooftops / I know that they could see the rise like new stocks / So I’m headed for the rooftops.” Nehru is going places.
For the uninitiated, consider this Nehru’s proper pitch to become one of the most important names in hip-hop. The 21-year-old has been prolific in his career thus far – first popping up on the scene in 2012 with debut collection ‘Nehruvian’ and following that up with a sizeable project each year since. His most recognised arrived in 2014 in the shape of ‘NehruvianDoom’, a collaborative album with masked rap legend MF DOOM – and to our delight, he’s back to lend his deft production hand on this album.

kendrick lamar -Black Panther: The Album
11 JANUARY 2018
RATED 8/10
Throughout the history of modern black cinema, there’s been as much precedence placed on the soundtrack as what’s actually projected on the silver screen. Though informed by the blaxploitation soundtracks of the ‘70s and the label-driven hip-hop soundtracks of the ‘90s, Black Panther: The Album is very much of its time: a well-produced and incredibly cohesive album with the loose swagger of a curated playlist.
